PM Kisan 20th Installment Not Released: Farmers Face a Longer Wait Farmers across the country who were anticipating the 20th installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana today will have to continue their wait. Following a major rally by the Prime Minister in Motihari, Bihar, it has been confirmed that the funds were not disbursed as many had hoped. ### Understanding the PM Kisan Scheme and DBT Under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, the central government provides an annual amount of ₹6000 directly to farmers. This is done through a system called Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The DBT model ensures that the funds are transferred directly into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts. This system was implemented to eliminate intermediaries. The speaker recalled a time when a former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, stated in 1989 that out of ₹100 sent by the government, only 10 paise reached the common person. Previously, money would travel from the state government to district administrations, then to block administrations, and finally through the village sarpanch or pradhan, with significant leakage along the way. With DBT, the money goes straight from the government to the farmer’s account. ### Today’s Update: No Funds Released Despite widespread expectation, the Prime Minister did not release the PM Kisan funds today, July 18th. During his visit to Bihar, no announcement was made regarding the 20th installment. The hope among farmers that a declaration would be made during the event did not come to fruition. ### An Unprecedented Delay The last installment of the PM Kisan scheme was released in February 2024. The scheme is designed to provide a payment every four months. It has now been nearly five months, marking the first time in the scheme’s history that such a long delay has occurred. Typically, funds are transferred within a day or two after the four-month period ends. The payment was originally expected on June 20th but did not happen. The next anticipated date was July 18th, which also passed without a release. This was predictable, as the government had not made any official announcement or declared a specific date for the fund transfer. An official date is usually provided before the government releases such payments. ### What Happens Next? Farmers must wait longer for the next installment. The government is expected to transfer the ₹2000 payment very soon, and it could now happen on any given day. The funds will likely be released during the Prime Minister’s next scheduled program, as soon as his schedule becomes available. Farmers are advised to wait for an official declaration from the government.
